The Readery (c.1500s)

This 16th century timber-framed house was once home to ‘The Reader’ at St Michael’s Church, appointed by the will of Sir Robert Hitcham to give daily Bible readings to residents of his almshouses.

Some properties on this side of Castle Street extend over the Castle ditch, suggesting that they were built after the castle went into decline.
