The Old Forge

Visit Framlingham Trail

The Old Forge

With the stables of the former ‘Commercial & Family Hotel & Posting House’ (now The Crown Hotel) on the opposite side of Fore Street, the forge was conveniently located to serve visiting coaches and their horses travelling between Ipswich and Norwich. Traffic could literally ‘pass through’ to Market Hill from Fairfield Road, by crossing Fore Street – until the open archway in the middle of hotel building was blocked up in 1952. The old stables at the hotel is now a beautiful function room and the former ‘coaching corridor’ now part of the hotel lounge and lobby!
