The Mere & Castle Viewpoint

A curtain-walled castle viewed across a wildlife-rich lake, with a medieval church to one side and cattle grazing the water-meadows… Few vistas are more impressive, and rarely do human history and natural history sit together as comfortably as they do here. A natural, river-fed feature, unaffected by human activity for the first 7,000 years of its life, the Mere was enlarged when the castle was built. Today its wildlife habitats include sedge swamps, damp meadows, open water, pollarded willows, scrub and mature trees.
