Queen’s Head Alley

Believed to be the original toll gate into the town, the archway at the top of the alley was once flanked by a butchers/slaughterhouse (right) and a half-timbered inn (left) built in the late 1400s. Originally the Blue Boar, its subsequent name probably refers to Queen Mary Tudor who left Framlingham Castle to claim the throne in 1553. A doss-house behind gave shelter to itinerant entertainers – whilst their dancing bears curled up outside!
