Jeaffreson’s Well (1896-8)

The canopied well, sunk in 1896, was gifted to the community as a touching memorial to local surgeon and doctor, William Jeaffreson. It served the town until mains water arrived in 1945. Don’t miss the beautiful plaque in the well canopy.

Traditionally beer was big business in this part of town. The 18th century mansion (‘Haynings’- Gr II*) at the Fore Street end of Castle Street belonged to a maltster. His maltings (demolished 1981) stood opposite, on the other side of Castle Street.
