Castle, Earthworks & Lanman Town Museum
The mighty 12th century curtain-walled castle with its deep, defensive earthworks replaced an earlier wooden motte and bailey. A home to barons and dukes, visited by kings and besieged by armies, it was here that Mary Tudor received news she needed to declare herself Queen (1553).
Within the walls, the 17th century ‘Red House’ (former Poor House) shares insightful exhibitions and the Lanman Museum in the ‘White House’ brings the town’s rich history to life through local artefacts. Don’t miss the wall-walk or a visit to the bailey for stunning views of the Mere and Framlingham College.
