Check House

Framlingham stretches across both sides of the Ore river valley, with its castle and college facing each other from valley-top vantage points. Once navigable and the life-blood of the town and its businesses for centuries, the River Ore still feeds the Mere.

Set back from Bridge Street, this tiny house marked the entrance to Maulden’s Mill. The large, steam-powered corn mill sat alongside the river, housing machinery forged locally at Whitmore & Binyon foundry in Wickham Market. It went silent in the 1930s, but its tall chimney towered over the Check House until the 1990s.
