Castle Pond

A surviving part of the Castle Ditch with a sinister history. Originally much larger and containing fish, it provided water for domestic purposes… and for ‘swimming’ witches. Many witch trials took place here – even a local vicar, tortured by the Witchfinder General in 1646, confessed to employing two imps to sink ships! Once the property of Nos. 1-3 Castle Street/the Castle Brewery (now the Castle Inn), the pond became a more formal, public feature in the 1960s.
